Dear Supporters,
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who continues to support our campaign to keep Dovecot Library and Breck Road Library open. Your signatures, shares, and presence at protests are helping to build a powerful voice for our communities a voice the council can’t ignore.
We’re proud to report that two peaceful, positive protests have now taken place, with excellent turnouts and strong community spirit. These actions have added real energy to the campaign and shown the depth of feeling across our city that closing these libraries is not an option.
More Than a Library - They are essential community hubs. Under our banner of More Than a Library, we’re reminding the council and the wider public of everything we stand to lose:
- Reading groups for all ages
- Free IT and digital access for those without it at home
- Study spaces and homework support for young people
- Community events and safe meeting spaces
- Support for adult learners and jobseekers
- Educational workshops, children’s activities, and more
For many, these libraries are one of the few remaining public places offering free access to knowledge, connection, and support. Removing them would be a devastating blow — especially in areas already facing deep inequalities.
We are now putting firm pressure on council decision-makers to sit down with us and AVCT (Alt Valley Community Trust) to work collaboratively on a solution that keeps both sites open. We are demanding a genuine and transparent dialogue — not only about the financial situation but about the social cost and the impact on everyday lives.
It’s not enough to talk about debt — we must talk about need, opportunity, and the harm of disinvestment in our communities.
We are proud to have the backing of three local representatives who understand what’s at stake:
Ian Byrne, Labour MP
Richard Kemp, Liberal Democrats
Alan Gibbons, Leader of Liverpool Community Independents
Their support strengthens our push and highlights that this is not a political issue it’s a people issue.
Please continue to share the petition, talk to your neighbours, attend our events, and keep the pressure on. Together, we can show that our libraries are worth fighting for because they are More Than a Library.
In solidarity,
The Campaign Team
