Save Braddock Rd. Parking & Accessibility: Oppose the “Improvement Project” Recommendation

Save Braddock Rd. Parking & Accessibility: Oppose the “Improvement Project” Recommendation
The Issue
On February 23, 2026, the Alexandria Traffic & Parking Board unanimously voted to approve city staff recommendations to:
1. Remove on-street parking on Braddock Rd between Mt Vernon Ave & Russell Rd, and on Commonwealth Ave between Braddock Rd & Spring St,
2. Consolidate the turn lanes and through lanes on the Braddock Road intersections with Russell Rd, withCommonwealth Ave, and with Mt. Vernon Ave,
3. Remove a disability parking space on W. Braddock Rd in front of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s only ADA compliant access, and
4. Add dedicated bike lanes on Braddock Rd from Russell Rd to Mt. Vernon Ave and on Commonwealth Ave from Braddock Rd to Spring St.
We support critical safety improvements on E. Braddock Rdbetween Mt. Vernon Ave & West St, the area needing improvement as identified by VDOT. We also support safety improvements on Braddock Rd between Russell Rd & Mt.Vernon Ave where they are needed, including Shared Lane markings & more crosswalks along with reduced speed zones and speed enforcement.
We believe that there are alternatives to the city staff proposal that achieve the same goals without the removal of parkingalong Braddock Rd. The current recommendation will result in significant changes for residents, congregants of local churches, service and delivery drivers, commuters and the greater Alexandria community causing increased congestion and unintended safety concerns along the Braddock corridor.
We oppose the removal of 100 parking spaces because it will:
· Adversely affect 52 homes, 4 churches and 5 congregations.
· Eliminate accessibility for our elderly and disabled neighbors.
· Overwhelm the already full side streets.
We oppose reducing Braddock Road intersections to single lanes because it will:
· Cause gridlock.
·Slow emergency vehicle response times.
· Increase pollution.
· Create dangerous cut through traffic on side streets.
The City’s data failed to justify the need for protected bike lanes because Braddock Rd is already safe between Russell Rd and Mt. Vernon Ave. with
· Only six minor car accidents here since 2017 (with 71 west of Russell Road), and
· No bicycle or pedestrian accidents during that time.
The residents of Braddock Road and other neighbors have filed Appeals to City Council to overturn the TPB decision. Please sign the petition to SUPPORT our Appeals and OPPOSE the current city staff proposal in favor of alternatives.
