Save Brackenridge Park Trees

Save Brackenridge Park Trees
The Issue
The City of San Antonio and Brackenridge Park Conservancy are still determined to chop down 100 trees along the river in Brackenridge Park, including Heritage Oaks and Cypress trees. Their goal is to change an historic forest park into an event space for profit. Their plans will demolish current picnic areas and roads, and alter open green space and natural areas.
Brackenridge Park is an Historic Landmark and Texas State Antiquities Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Artifacts in the Park date back to over 12,000 years. The site is sacred to Indigenous People who still hold religious ceremonies under the trees along the river, and who currently have a FEDERAL LAWSUIT against the City for protection of the sacred site.
The City says these historic trees have to be cut down to restore the historic river walls built in the 1930s and 40s, BUT the walls were built to protect the trees according to p. 65 in the National Register of Historic Places.
Cutting down trees will not only impact the natural and historic landscape that is Brackenridge Park, it will also have an adverse affect on the environment of the park and the entire city.
- Brackenridge Park is located in a floodplain in central San Antonio. Trees help control floods by preventing soil erosion along the river.
- San Antonio is currently in violation of EPA standards for air quality. Trees improve air quality.
- San Antonio has record temperatures over 100 degrees. Trees cool the air in the park and surrounding area.
- Trees are also habitats for birds and wildlife that contribute to a balanced ecosystem.
We Petition the City of San Antonio, its officials and partners to:
- STOP the plans to remove Heritage and Significant trees from Brackenridge Park
- develop a plan with the COMMUNITY that will PRESERVE and PROTECT the natural environment and historic features of Brackenridge Park: trees, water-ways, natural landscape, structures, and wildlife (including migratory birds).
- maintain the CULTURE of the park as a free, family-friendly Historic Park where people gather at-will to enjoy the outdoors and engage in their own activities with friends and family.
