Save Boulevard Drinks — Protect Jersey City's 90-Year-Old Hot Dog from Closure
The Issue
For nearly 90 years, Boulevard Drinks has been serving hot dogs to the people of Journal Square in Jersey City, New Jersey. Commuters, neighbors, and loyal customers from across the country have made it a ritual. Last week, a customer flew in from California just to get one of their $3.75 hot dogs.
Now, the building's new owner has given the restaurant 30 days to leave — to make room for a new development that includes a Whole Foods.
There's just one problem: Boulevard Drinks has a lease through 2034. Manager Victor Victoratos, who has run the spot on and off for nearly 50 years, says the previous owner never disclosed the lease to the new buyer. "We have all the proof," he said. "Everything the attorneys have."
Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa has been vocal: the new development — which will bring 85 units of affordable housing — is welcome, but not at the cost of a neighborhood institution. He has been in talks with the new owner to find a spot for Boulevard Drinks in the new building.
Neighborhoods change. That's inevitable. But a nearly 90-year-old business with a valid lease and a community that loves it shouldn't be pushed out in 30 days to make room for a national grocery chain.
Sign this petition to tell Jersey City's mayor and the new building owner: find a way to keep Boulevard Drinks in Journal Square.
