Save Block Scheduling at Claremore High School

The Issue

Claremore Public Schools is trying to remove block scheduling from the High school, along with Encore and WIN. This will remove so many useful classes and opportunities. The entire BioMed program and NE Tech program will be gone. Help Claremore students pursue their education and stop this change.

School is a place to prepare young minds for the very real and very big world ahead of them. The removal of block scheduling will be one of Claremore Public School's worst decisions.

Block scheduling provides countless opportunities for different fields of education. With block scheduling we have the NE Tech Engineering program. This program is in such high demand that students from other schools come to our campus just to take these classes. NE Tech is incredibly beneficial for career opportunities and education. With that there is also the PLTW BioMed course. This course is perfect for students like me and many others with an interest in the medical and forensic science field. These classes are a key part of our school. To remove these opportunities is to completely disregard your duties as educators.

Block Scheduling and Preparation for College

One of the main points of block scheduling is the similarity to college class timing. The transition from Junior High to High School is entirely insignificant when compared to college. Even if some students aren't entirely college-oriented, the ability to change classes each semester for personal or other reasons is beneficial. Albeit longer classes, it’s a class that students won't be burdened by for the rest of the school year.

Another fault when it comes to “going traditional” (a 7-class school day) is the loss of Encore and WIN. These programs significantly help students with their assignments and classes. Due to absences, school activities, and anything else a student can be behind on their work. This extra 30-40 minutes each day can potentially prevent someone from failing a class entirely. Removing these programs will cause so many students to fall behind without a fair chance to catch up.

Students are Being Affected, Therefore they Should Have a Say.

So many decisions are made in a near empty room, without a real student in sight. They may be children but they are people. People whose lives are affected by your decisions, with no say and no influence. Most members of the school board haven't been 15 in a long time. Times have changed, and students want to live and have a decent education to set themselves up for success. To take these opportunities away from them is selfish and ignorant.
