KEEP BLAIR OPEN

No decisions about our school without us!

[Petición en español]

We, the undersigned parents, students, alumni, and community members, urge the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education to reject the current proposals to close and split Blair Middle and High School.

Blair is more than a building.
It is where our students learn, grow and find stability in uncertain times. Blair is a a proven 6–12 educational model, and a vital part of Pasadena’s present and future. Closing or dividing it would create a lasting disruption we cannot afford.

WHAT’S AT STAKE
Closing Blair means:

  • students and families losing stability during an already fragile time
  • families facing new uncertainty, longer commutes, and broken school communities
  • the loss of a proven 6–12 model that supports student success over time

At a moment when our community is still recovering, this decision would take more from students who have already lost enough.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Students need stability—not more disruption
Blair students are already navigating the impacts of COVID and the Eaton Fire. Many families remain displaced or are rebuilding. Closing and splitting their school adds another significant loss at a time when stability is critical.

This decision is being rushed through a flawed process
The current proposal relies on incomplete analysis and a consultant-driven process that has not meaningfully engaged families or the community. Decisions of this scale require transparency, trust, and public participation, none of which have been fully met. We need a community-centered visioning process, not a rushed recommendation shaped without community input.

Blair is a unique and successful 6–12 program
Blair’s model provides continuity, mentorship, and integrated academic programs across grades. Programs like International Baccalaureate (IB) are deeply embedded and cannot be easily relocated without loss of quality and access.

This plan risks long-term financial harm
The projected savings are limited and do not account for potential enrollment loss. Blair attracts interdistrict families who choose PUSD—families who strengthen the district’s reputation and stability. Losing them risks compounding the district’s financial challenges.

Blair is critical to access and future growth
Blair’s location near major transit, planned housing developments, and local institutions makes it uniquely positioned to serve both current and future students. Closing it ignores where Pasadena is growing and how students access education.

OUR DEMANDS:
We respectfully ask the Board to:

  • Reject the current consolidation proposals for Blair School.
  • Pause major closure decisions to allow for more complete data and community recovery
  • Reconsider. Explore alternatives that preserve successful programs, maintain enrollment, and minimize disruption to students
