SAVE BLACK MARKET, HELP US MAKE IT TO 10!
The Issue
Black Market Nubian is fighting for its life. GOFUND ME: https://gofund.me/b63893485
For nearly a decade, Black Market Nubian has been rooted in Roxbury as a living home for Black culture, creativity, commerce, and community. It has served as a powerful platform for artists, artisans, entrepreneurs, makers, activists, vendors, and neighbors—creating space where Black life and excellence are not only visible, but valued, nurtured, and celebrated.
Now, as we approach our 10th anniversary, Black Market Nubian faces its most urgent challenge yet: the possibility of permanent closure on Thursday, April 30, if the funds cannot be raised in time to secure the building and protect this sacred space.
This moment is about far more than one business.
Over the past several years, our broader community has endured a disproportionate amount of legal action, business closures, political intimidation, massive joblessness, and retracted commitments tied to opportunities that were promised during the 2021 racial reckoning. At the same time, rapid gentrification and the continued displacement of Black spaces have placed enormous pressure on institutions like Black Market Nubian that have worked tirelessly to remain rooted in the neighborhoods they serve.
This fight is about the right to remain, the right to grow, and the right to thrive in the community we have always called home.
Black Market Nubian is an ecosystem. It is a beacon for Nubian Square. It is a place of visibility, belonging, expression, and opportunity. Losing it would mean losing a beloved institution that has created pathways for countless artists, makers, entrepreneurs, community partners, and families across Roxbury and beyond.
The funds raised through this emergency effort will go directly toward purchasing the building, ensuring that Black Market Nubian can continue offering high-quality programming and remain permanently rooted in the neighborhood it has helped energize and sustain.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for the preservation of Black space, Black cultural infrastructure, and Black economic life in Roxbury. You are helping send a clear message that Black Market Nubian deserves to remain open, protected, and anchored in the community for generations to come.
We call on city leaders, philanthropic partners, investors, business leaders, and supporters of Black cultural spacesto act now.
Help Black Market Nubian secure its home.
Help protect what has been built together.
Help keep Black Market Nubian open beyond April 30.
