The Issue

Save Chicago's Black Bookstores
Chicago once had over 20 Black bookstores. Today, only a few remain — pushed out by high rents, zoning changes, no access to capital. and online retail giants.

However, there is a resurgence of stores here in Chicago. Why? Because Black bookstores are more than stores. They educate our children, unite our communities, and preserve our culture.

We are asking Mayor Brandon Johnson, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, and Chicago Aldermen to:

Give Black bookstores 10% of all book purchase contracts for Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Public Libraries
Pass the Chicago Black Bookstore & Cultural Preservation Ordinance. to fund and protect Black bookstores citywide

We are also asking community Leaders, Businesses, Residents, and authors to support our Black Bookstores.

This is how we save them.
