Save Beaumont Park. Leicester
The Issue
Beaumont Park has been earmarked for destruction by Leicester City Council as part of the City's Local Plan. They plan to replace it with industrial units, with Peter Soulsby describing the loss of green space for the Beaumont Community as 'regrettable'. We, the community of Beaumont Leys say NO, this is not a viable response for the massive impact this decision will have on the local environment, the quality of life and mental well being for the local community.
Beaumont Park is used by thousands of people each week and provides safe and quick passage to the shopping centre. It is also used by dog walkers, families at the weekend, cyclists and people that just enjoy sitting in a green space for their mental health. Featuring an outside gym, wildlife pond and a bmx track, it is one of the few remaining green spaces, within a short walk from the housing estates, making it inclusive for the elderly and wheelchair users.
The plan will also remove the only woodland left in the local area at huge environmental cost to wildlife such as Kestrels, Green Woodpeckers, Tawny Owls and Deer. The benefit to the local community's quality of life, health and wellbeing clearly outweighs the benefits of the industrial strategic position of the site.
The pollution and congestion are already bad for residents due to the A563 Krefeld Way and this would get worse, as would the noise from traffic and industrial units. This would have an extremely negative effect on the area and local residents.
