The Issue

BASIS'S FUNDING HAS BEEN PULLED - IT WILL CLOSE IN JULY.

BASIS has been a crucial lifeline for individuals in Sunderland facing homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, veterans reintegrating into society, people recently released from hospitals or prisons, and those battling addiction or poor physical and mental health. For countless people, this hub is their only safe and consistent point of contact with essential services that protect their health, wellbeing, and public safety.

The potential removal of funding for BASIS concerns me deeply. Not only does it threaten the vulnerable individuals who rely on this service for support, but it also risks having a profound impact on Sunderland as a whole. Without BASIS, we could see an increase in rough sleeping, more individuals with untreated medical conditions, higher addiction-related harm, safeguarding failures, and added pressure on our already strained emergency services.

Statistics show that community support services like BASIS are integral to reducing homelessness and improving public health outcomes. According to a report by Crisis, a charitable organization that addresses homelessness, those who use hubs like BASIS are significantly more likely to find stable housing and employment. Furthermore, the NHS reports that consistent access to healthcare significantly reduces emergency room visits, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of supporting organizations like BASIS.

Removing BASIS would not only endanger the lives of those it helps but would also translate to higher costs for public services in the long term. We cannot afford to neglect the needs of our community members who are most in need.

There are actionable solutions to ensure BASIS remains funded and available to those who need it. Local government and community leaders must prioritize this service and explore potential funding avenues, such as reallocating budget resources, launching community fundraising initiatives, or seeking grants from public and private sectors dedicated to community welfare.

The people of Sunderland deserve to live in a community where everyone has access to support when they need it most. Please sign this petition to urge our leaders to take immediate action to save BASIS, preserve crucial services, and protect the vulnerable individuals who depend on them. Together, we can ensure Sunderland remains a safe and supportive place for everyone.
