The Issue

For generations, the Midway Diner has stood as a cherished landmark in Barrie, Ontario, welcoming locals and visitors alike since 1895. Initially a grocer, the old brick walls of this iconic establishment tell stories of community gatherings, family breakfasts, and moments shared by friends on a quiet afternoon. To many, it isn't just a Diner—it's a vital piece of Barrie's rich history and identity.

Yet, despite its significance, the Midway Diner now faces the threat of demolition. Plans for new developments promise progress, but at the cost of erasing a tangible link to our past.  As Barrie's oldest operational restaurant, the Midway not only serves as a reminder of Barrie's early days, but also offers a sense of continuity and belonging in our rapidly changing city.

Preservation of historical sites like the Midway Diner provides cultural, educational, and economic benefits to the community. Studies show that heritage conservation can boost local economies and enhance the community's quality of life. Therefore, instead of demolishing the Diner, we ask that the City's proposed  expansion of Wastewater Treatment facilities be built around the restaurant, thereby preserving its unique charm and historical value.

This petition calls on Barrie's City Council, heritage conservation authorities, and community leaders to recognize the importance of the Midway Diner and take immediate action to prevent its demolition. By exploring alternative avenues for urban development that integrate rather than eradicate our historical sites, we can ensure that Barrie's history and heritage live on.

Stand with us in defending our cultural heritage. Sign this petition to save the Midway Diner and protect Barrie's history for future generations.
