Save Ballarat's heritage heart

Save Ballarat's heritage heart
The issue
We call on the State Government of Victoria to take immediate action to protect and preserve Ballarat's historic central area. This precinct, with its heritage streetscapes, historic buildings and cultural landmarks represents our shared history, identity and pride.
Ballarat Heritage Watch and the undersigned are concerned that new State Government’s high density building regulations will destroy what remains of Ballarat’s heritage, what makes it an attractive place to live, and a popular destination for visitors. We call for exclusion of all forms of high-density development including multi storey developments from the area outlined below.

In 2013 the City of Ballarat massive survey, “Ballarat Imagine” found that Ballarat’s heritage buildings, parks and trees had the highest value for residents and visitors.
If the heritage of the CBD retains its integrity future generations will be able to see the impact of gold and immigration on Ballarat, Victoria and Australia - not in isolated surviving examples, but in the context of a preserved, whole community of people from around the world, a community with schools, churches, industry, commerce, transport, pubs and homes. A time capsule.
Uncontrolled development, inappropriate alterations, and the destruction, overshadowing, or neglect of historically significant sites threaten the character that makes Ballarat unique.
Once lost, this heritage cannot be replaced.
Why this matters
- Protecting heritage supports tourism and local businesses
- Safeguarding heritage ensures that future generations can experience Ballarat's rich story
- Sustainable reuse of historic buildings reduces environmental impact
Ballarat's heritage is not an obstacle to progress – it is the foundation of thoughtful and responsible growth.
