The Issue

As a new self-published YA author, the world of imagination, storytelling, and its creativity have always been my passion and safe place. However, my joy in writing is overshadowed by the increasing prevalence of novels created through artificial intelligence. It's terrible to witness this crime against the very essence of creative writing, because real stories are born, as they should be, from human imagination, personal experiences, and the complexities of human emotion.

The rise of AI in fiction writing poses a significant threat to the integrity and authenticity of real literary works and their authors. While the advancement of other technology can bring benefits in some aspects of life, AI's place within the world of creativity should be considered much more thoroughly than it has been previously. AI-generated novels are not the product of a writer's imagination, nor do they capture the genuine beauty or struggle of crafting an original story that resonates on a personal and emotional level.

Moreover, the use of AI in developing fiction novels undermines the efforts and dedication of authors who work tirelessly to write brand new stories that reflect human experiences and emotions, and connect with the reader on another level. This technological approach risks promoting literary homogenization, because AI is factually unable to create new stories because it is not human. It lacks the cultural and emotional understanding that humans use to create beautiful worlds for others to enjoy, and pieces together a story from the material it was given to learn from: real novels, without the authors' permission.

There are also plenty of ethical concerns surrounding the property rights of AI-generated novels. Who owns these works? The person who told AI to write it, or the hundreds, maybe thousands of authors whose stories AI used as its source? At this point, we might as well say no one owns them. And what happens to the earning potential and recognition for authors who pour their hearts into their craft while competing in a market flooded with AI-produced content?

We must take action to preserve the art of fiction writing by calling on publishers, literary agents, and self-publishing platforms to adopt and promote policies that more strongly discourage or, better, ban the use of AI in creating novels. Encourage human creativity by supporting works that are crafted entirely by humans, and ensure that literature remains a testament to the wonderful world of imagination.

Sign this petition to advocate for the preservation of authentic storytelling and the support of human authors in an increasingly digitalized world. Together, we can ensure that the art of writing continues to flourish from those who cherish it without the looming shadow of artificial interference.
