The issue

Aradale Asylum stands as a monumental piece of our shared history in Victoria. It’s not just a structure; it’s a testament to the social and medical history of our region. As a frequent visitor of Ararat, I have witnessed firsthand how this iconic site contributes significantly to our local economy. The closure of Aradale Asylum and its subsequent deterioration or potential demolition poses a severe threat not just to our cultural heritage but also to the livelihood of many who depend on the tourism it attracts from the day tours and night tours and  those who are interested in photography.

In recent years, visitors from all over Australia and abroad have flocked to our town, eager to learn about the stories embedded within the walls of Aradale. The unique architectural and historical significance of the asylum is irreplaceable. Moreover, the tours  held there have provided employment opportunities and have helped many small businesses in Ararat to thrive.

It is alarming to consider the impact its loss would have. According to Tourism Research Australia, cultural tourism accounted for over $12.4 billion in 2019, showcasing the vital role history plays in tourism. Losing such an exquisite example of Victorian-era architecture would not only diminish our historical landscape but also undermine our regional economy, heavily reliant on these tourism dollars.

We have a potential solution that can save Aradale from decay. Instead of letting this historic building fall into disrepair, we can work to preserve and fix the buildings , have a proper maintenance plan in place so it doesn’t fall into the is position again and that is safe for the public.

The government and heritage organizations must prioritize funding and strategize with local councils and historical societies to ensure the survival of Aradale. By signing this petition, you’re standing up not only for the preservation of our history but also for the economic wellbeing of Ararat and its surrounding businesses.

Join us in this effort and help protect what is much more than just an old building—it is a vital part of Victoria's historical fabric and economic backbone. Sign this petition to urge our local government to act now before it's too late.
