Save Anthropology at the University of Kent
The Issue
Under the University of Kent's new Kent 2030 strategy, several courses are being threatened with closure after the current first years have graduated. One of the departments being threatened is anthropology.
We believe this is a mistake. As a subject, anthropology is vital but is not offered at many universities. Even fewer universities offer the subject of biological anthropology. Over the last few years, the anthropology department has endured numerous budget cuts, the number of modules offered severely reduced, and a reduction in staff. Yet, despite the bureaucratic interferences, the anthropology department at UKC was ranked 10th in the country in 2021. 91% of graduating students stated they were satisfied with the quality of their teaching. The research within the department was rated as 'world-leading' and of 'international quality' in the 2023 Research Excellence Framework report. The lecturers at Kent are all brilliant academics and genuinely care about their subjects and their students. They do not deserve to have their jobs threatened, their subjects devalued and their lives disrupted because of overheads.
Please sign our petition to show the university that anthropology is a valuable degree and should be kept alive.
