Save Anthem
The Issue
EA has announced that they will be shutting down Anthem in January of 2026. While Anthem is not the most popular game in the world, it has a tight-knit community of dedicated players who STILL play the game to this day, in spite of the fact that the numbers have dwindled. These players, and everyone who purchased the game at any time, will lose their access to the game they purchased when this happens. So this is what I propose.
1.) Release the server files, or dedicated server binaries, as an optional DLC.
2.) Remove microtransactions by integrating their content into the standard loot pool, making all items obtainable through gameplay.
Releasing the server files, or dedicated server binaries, as part of the game as an optional, free DLC, will allow the files to be bundled with the game, requiring purchase to obtain them, and would allow EA to continue selling the game without the cost of hosting servers. Removing the microtransactions and placing those items in the general loot pool will prevent people from monetizing their server. This will also offer a path of least resistance to EA in terms of preserving the game.
While modifying Anthem into a single-player offline experience may be technically complex, providing the tools for private servers could be a more cost-effective, community-driven alternative.
Game preservation is in the spotlight right now. EA has a rare opportunity to earn significant goodwill with their current and future customers by showing that games preservation of a live service game is possible, and monetarily feasible, as EA can still sell the game in its post server shutdown state by offering access to the necessary server tools, giving the community the ability to preserve and continue the experience long after the official servers are gone.
Few AAA publishers have embraced live-service preservation, and none at this scale. This is the perfect opportunity for EA to do this. By showing that a big AAA studio can preserve their live-service games by passing the hosting torch on to the community, this will pave the way for other AAA publishers to follow suit, and will open the doors to games preservation.
This is a historic opportunity. Please, EA. Save Anthem. Release the server files, or dedicated server binaries, so that we, the community, can pick up where you leave off and ensure that the stories of the Anthem community will continue to be told in the present tense, and not the past tense.
If you believe Anthem deserves a future, and that game preservation matters, please sign this petition and help show EA that the community still cares.
Save Anthem.
