Growing up in Reading, PA, the Hillside Pool was more than just a place to swim; it was the heart of our community, a sanctuary during the summer heat, and a place where lasting friendships were forged. Childhood memories here are saturated with the sound of splashing water and the laughter of families. It was a bustling, safe, and wholesome hub for residents of all ages, especially our youth.

Unfortunately, Hillside Pool is on the brink of demolition, scheduled to be replaced entirely by a splash pad. While a splash pad offers some enjoyment, it cannot replace the countless benefits of a deep-water pool.

The Problem Facing Our Families:

Severe Shortage: Currently, the city of Reading only has one other deep-water pool, which is perpetually at full capacity.

Limited Access: Eliminating Hillside leaves hundreds of families without a viable option for swimming, dramatically cutting recreational opportunities for our youth.

Loss of Life Skills: Swimming is a life-saving skill and a wonderful sport. A splash pad alone strips our youth of the chance to truly learn how to swim.

Our Proposed Solution: The Hybrid Model. We urge the city of Reading to amend its plans and transform Hillside into a hybrid recreation facility: a dual splash pad and pool.

This compromise caters to everyone: providing shallow, interactive play areas for toddlers and young children, alongside a preserved deep-water area for families, lap swimmers, and youth recreation. This solution respects both our city's heritage and its modern needs.
