The Issue

The Florida Youth Challenge Academy (FLYCA) is at risk of closing and losing it would take away one of the most effective, life-changing programs available to Florida’s youth.

This is not a traditional school, and it is not a place where “bad kids” are sent.

It is a voluntary, military-style program where teenagers choose to step away from their daily environment for six months to commit to discipline, structure, and personal growth. Cadets live on a structured schedule, participate in physical training, and learn accountability, leadership, and real-life skills that prepare them for adulthood.

This program has a proven track record nationwide, with over 223,000 graduates and more than 14.2 million hours of community service completed. In Florida, it has helped thousands of young people over the past 20+ years find direction, graduate, and build a future.

For many students, this program is a turning point.

Cadets have the opportunity to complete their education, earn their high school credential, and gain life skills such as time management, responsibility, and confidence. They leave not just with knowledge… but with purpose.

At a time when:

Many students are struggling in traditional school systems
Mental health challenges among youth are rising
Families are searching for real alternatives

Programs like FYCA are not optional — they are essential.

We acknowledge that any concerns surrounding the program must be taken seriously. Accountability, proper credentialing, and mental health support should always be strengthened and improved.

But eliminating a program that has helped thousands is not the solution.

The solution is to restructure, improve, and invest in it…  not remove it entirely.

With the National Guard stepping away, this is an opportunity to rebuild the program with even stronger support systems, including enhanced mental health resources and continued community and veteran involvement.

Florida’s youth deserve options.

They deserve structure.

They deserve a real chance.

We cannot afford to lose a program that has already proven it changes lives.
