The Issue

Music Room London is a much loved grassroots live music venue in south east London for new and established artists housed in a former public library. We have 5 rehearsal studios for bands to practice 7 days a week, which are used by established musicians and new and up and coming artists. We host regular live music performances in our character bar area, most are free of charge to audiences to make music accessible to all. We have a wonderful beer garden which is a green natural oasis in the urban environment.

In 2022 planning permission was granted to Grainger PLC and the London Borough of Lewisham for a mixed use development adjacent to us. We have now been told that the design needs to change significantly - there will be higher blocks and more flats directly next to our venue. Despite these huge changes no updated noise assessment has been done of our venue of the effect of these changes and the application to change the design is being streamlined rather than being a full planning application. Higher blocks and more flats so close to us risks restrictions on us and even closure of our venue.

We are calling for:

  • the developer to work with us to find a solution for us and for the new occupiers of the development, so we can all exist in harmony without creating a conflict situation
  • no streamlining of the application, a full and proper application process is essential to give the changes the careful consideration which is needed
  • a comprehensive noise assessment of the effect of the changes to be done before any decision is made
  • the developer to be responsible for these steps and changes under the Agent of Change principle.

Please sign our petition urgently by 20 April to record your objection to these changes without proper safeguards for Music Room London.

Please don’t lose yet another grassroots live music venue - once we’re gone, we’re gone. Help us to protect and save Music Room London.
