Save Allen ISD Schools

Save Allen ISD Schools
The Issue
This is the attendance rezoning proposal the city of Allen has shared with the community at large:
- Realignment of attendance zones at all elementary campuses to alleviate functional capacity issues at several campuses, with an effort to move as few families as possible
- Repurpose Anderson Elementary into an Early Childhood Campus to accommodate the state-required transition to Full Day Prekindergarten
- Repurpose Rountree Elementary for future non-instructional programming needs
- Relocate the One-Way Dual Language program from Boyd Elementary to Chandler Elementary
The city keeps saying they are making choices "with an effort to move as few families as possible." Affecting the fewest number of families, by definition is affecting a minority of people; that's just how numbers work. But it amazes me that the minority they are disenfranchising also "happens" to have the HIGHEST DENSITY of racial and ethnic minorities and low-income families in the city! When a rich white majority compels a racial, ethnic, and economic minority to sacrifice their rights and privileges for the majority's convenience, that becomes a social injustice.
They say they are doing this to benefit the west side schools, yet not a single west side school was mentioned in the proposal. They have yet to explain how closing two elementary schools on the east side of town benefits the west side of town. Why not re-zone so students from the west side of town attend schools on the east side of town? Instead, they are coalescing their racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic minorities into fewer schools. I thought school segregation was outlawed almost 70 years ago, yet through this rezoning proposal, they are squeezing minorities into fewer schools while the rich white schools are receiving unspecified benefits.
If this proposal is accepted as it is written, Allen ISD will close two schools with a high percentage of minorities in order to benefit the rich white people on the other side of town. This petition is to tell Allen ISD that we do not approve of this proposal.
