Save All Saint’s Church Mackworth after the devastating arson attack

The Issue

All Saint’s Church Mackworth, one of the finest Grade I listed churches in Derbyshire, was damaged by an arson attack. Largely a medieval building it stood bestride a Roman road and worship on the site could go back that far. However some of the most important and irreplaceable items the church contained were comparatively more modern, dating from the late 19th and early 20th century such as alabaster which formed an important part of its listing.

We were all thankful the church was insured for £13 million but unfortunately the Parochial Church Council intends to reallocate the insurance money to make a community center within the church. This means the internal layout will change, the stained glass will not be replaced or the alabaster restored. These will be replaced by meeting rooms and sound systems. This will be the only opportunity to restore this church and we’d like to hand this petition to the Diocese to consider along with the modernisation plans. A community hall is being built along with a school on Langley park so there is also no need for another. Allowing these internal changes to All Saint’s will see our heritage lost forever.

This church has played a part in so many families lives. Please sign and share.
