Save Achi, the Rescued Guide Dog, from Euthanasia
The Issue
Achi, a chocolate Labrador and trained guide dog, recently made headlines for being rescued from a sunken yacht off the coast of East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. However, despite surviving the ordeal and being cared for by East London vet Dr. Pete Wood, Achi's life hangs in the balance due to a government instruction mandating his euthanasia.
Achi's story is a testament to resilience and survival. After being rescued, the dog was placed in the care of Dr. Wood, who ensured that Achi was safe, healthy, and well-cared for. Rather than being praised and celebrated for surviving such a traumatic incident, Achi now faces the threat of being put down.
The Eastern Cape community, alongside animal welfare organizations and dog lovers across South Africa, are united in the call to save Achi. This beloved guide dog represents more than just a pet; he is a symbol of hope and courage against the odds.
The government's instruction to euthanize Achi is not only inhumane but also disregards the potential for the dog's recovery and continued service as a trained guide dog. Decisions should be made considering both Achi's well-being and the value he brings to the community.
Animal rights are a cornerstone of a compassionate society. Euthanizing a healthy, capable animal like Achi contradicts the principles of conservation and respect for life that South Africans hold dear. Re-evaluating this decision could pave the way for improved animal welfare standards and more humane treatment of animals in distress.
We urge the South African authorities to reconsider their decision and allow Achi to live a full, productive life. Your support can make a significant difference; please join us in advocating for Achi's right to live. Sign this petition to demonstrate our collective commitment to animal welfare and justice for Achi.
Achi and his family are not from South Africa, they had been travelling for a while on sea . They had to be rescued as things on the yacht did not go smoothly .
He has been in East London quarantine for 2 weeks and is healthy. they can start the process of acquiring permits and doing all the tests needed to clear him. His family did not plan to stop here, it was an emergency. Hopefully the government can see this was not a planned stop to bring the dog ashore . Achi deserves to live .
