Replace Winnacunnet High School's Native American Mascot

The Issue

The Winnacunnet High School mascot is currently the Warrior, which is perpetuating harmful, stereotypical Native American imagery. We are calling for the removal of all depictions related to appropriated Native persons or culture which includes (but not limited to) the Warrior head, spears, feathers with beads, and arrowheads.

In 2002, the New Hampshire State Board of Education passed a resolution on schools' use of Native American mascots stating "No matter how well meaning their intentions, that their actions may be offensive and harmful to some and therefore, need to be eliminated." Since this resolution was passed, Winnacunnet has not made any significant efforts to remove/replace the Warrior image.

The American Psychological Association found that the use of stereotypical Native American imagery is harmful to not only Native peoples, but are also undermines the educational experiences of members of all communities.

We are also asking the Winnacunnet community to come up with alternative  designs to propose to the school board!

"Rather than honoring Native peoples, these caricatures and stereotypes are harmful, perpetuate negative stereotypes of America’s first peoples, and contribute to a disregard for the personhood of Native peoples." - National Congress of American Indians
