Save Gunung Raya Langkawi

Save Gunung Raya Langkawi
The Issue
Save Gunung Raya from over 93 acres of virgin rainforest logging and sand mining.
The lives of hundreds of animals, trees and wildlife are at stake if we do nothing now. We have discovered impending logging and sand mining projects at Langkawi Island’s Forest Reserve, which could destroy one of Malaysia’s few protected sanctuaries for nature.
Gunung Raya is home to a diverse ecosystem with wildlife such as great hornbills, black giant squirrels and island flying foxes. The mountain is 220 million years old and composed mainly of granite. It is a part of Southeast Asia’s first UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK, chosen because of its geological importance to the region and conservation of nature.
If the projects are allowed to continue, loggers and sand miners will take advantage of the rich natural resources on Langkawi for profit. Logging and sand mining pose a threat to the rich ecosystem and the hundreds of species of flora and fauna on the island. It can change and destroy nesting, feeding and breeding sites of native animals, and destroy unique species of trees and plants.
It will also damage the island’s natural formations which have the oldest and most complete Palaeozoic (540 million to 250 million years ago) geological record in the region. Beyond that, it may possibly pollute the island’s sources of water. The water from the underground aquifers sustains the flora and fauna on the island, and is also a source of drinking water for people.
We have reported these incidences to the local authorities. However, we need them to take action to stop further damage to Langkawi’s ecosystem before it’s too late. We humbly request that Permodalan Kedah Berhad, Menteri Besar Kedah, Pejabat Pengarah Tanah Dan Galian Negeri Kedah, Forestry Department Kedah/ Peninsular Malaysia, Department of Environment/ Ministry of Environment And Water, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad as Langkawi’s Member of Parliament and the Sultan of Kedah please help to stop the logging and sand mining projects at Gunung Raya’s Forest Reserve, Naturally Langkawi.
We need Malaysians, environmentalists and anyone who cares about nature to stand with us. Please help us share and sign the petition to stop this and save Langkawi‘s Gunung Raya Forest Reserve.
