Santa Cruz City plans to start work on a part of Segment 7 that is about 1 mile long running through the Westside of Santa Cruz. The Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Report is essentially the last step before breaking ground and today is the last day to submit public comments. Greenway believes spending money on the trail is a mistake since the results of the UCIS could change the direction we take in the corridor. I urge the City not to begin taking down trees, excavating, and wasting taxpayer funds while the Unified Corridor Study is ongoing. The narrow, mixed-used trail currently proposed will not encourage or SAFELY accommodate a growing population of bicycle and e-bike commuters and others who value health and enjoy active recreation and transportation. Thus it would have little impact on safety, health, or our greenhouse gas emissions.
