S BurkSanta Cruz, CA, United States

Senate Bill SB 9 will be heard by the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee on June 22

SB 9 is a neighborhood bill that wipes out single-family zoning statewide and allows a large increase in the number of homes that can be built on lots of existing homes.

Tuesday, Jun 22 at 1:30 pm the bill will be voted on. Write these two representatives who will be voting on the bill to tell them to vote "No" on Bill SB 9.

There are better ways to add one or two ADUs on a property where room allows without the rushed process Bill SB 9 calls for. Some of us can see one or two ADUs on a property depending on the size of the lot but 4 to 6 on one lot is excessive. Here is the bill to read: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB9

More on Bill SB 9:

SB 9 by Toni Atkins and Scott Wiener. This divisive bill removes single-family zoning in California and a threat to 7 million homeowners. Wiener has called yards and single-family homes “immoral.” SB 9 is not a “duplex” bill. It allows 4 market-rate homes where 1 now stands, up to 6 units if developers use a hidden “two-step” that Livable California volunteer attorneys spotted, and 8 units with local accessory dwelling units (ADUs) The units will not need to adhere to any town's objective standards and will have a local agency to conduct the ministerial process with the agency's objective standards making a fast timeline for building approval. Remember it is not what your neighbors would build. It is about the possibility of when a neighbor's home is sold how many homes could be built next to you. There are many homes on large lots in Santa Cruz that are particularly at risk of having a large number of homes added if a developer purchases the home and uses Bill SB 9 to build several homes on the lot.
It has been brought to my attention through SB 9 homes would become more expensive, as investors and pension funds jump into bidding wars against families wishing to buy a home. Facing withering criticism, author Atkins, in a Sacramento Bee op-ed, said her bill gives “homeowners the opportunity to reimagine their property.” No. Only the rich and developers can finance full-sized homes in their yard. SB 9 is a senseless gamble against 21M people living in homes they own.

Contact Mark Stone and John Laird it is important they vote No.

Thank you.
