Sangkaya: Make Your Coconut Ice-creams Free of Dairy

The Issue

Sangkaya is one of the few eateries that serve dairy alternatives such as coconut ice-cream in Malaysia. Hence, most lactose-intolerant people and vegans are attracted to their products. But little do people know that their coconut ice-creams do in fact contain dairy. It is not stated and customers unwittingly consume it.

This is a dangerous situation since dairy is one of the biggest allergens in the world, so that many products on the market indicate dairy ingredients in bold on the packaging; even trace amounts. According to FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), "allergy to cow’s milk is the most common food allergy in infants and young children. Symptoms of a milk allergy reaction can range from mild, such as hives, to severe, such as anaphylaxis". Approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy, the US National Library of Medicine states.

Dairy contains pus, hormones, saturated fat and cholesterol as well, which is why some people choose not to consume it. It is a very sad situation that dairy alternatives like coconut ice-creams contain it when it is not necessary at all.

Furthermore, veganism is a growing movement in the world with many benefits for a country's health, environment and economy, which is why many restaurants and eating places cater to vegan diets. As a matter of fact, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google's parent company Alphabet, has named veganism as the number one “game-changing” trend of the future. It is therefore of vital importance for products like coconut ice-cream to not contain animal-derived ingredients since vegans are a prime consumer of such products.

All in all, it is in the best interests of the community and Sangkaya itself to remove dairy from their coconut ice-creams and make it a healthy, delicious plant-based product range.
