CMU Sanctuary Campus Now! 

Students for a Democratic Society demands that Central Michigan University adopt a sanctuary campus, which bars Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) from coming onto campus without a warrant. 

Currently, CMU’s policies prohibit I.C.E. from going into restricted areas on campus. These restricted areas include residence halls with key card access, dorm rooms, faculty and staff offices, and classrooms while being used for their educational purposes. However, I.C.E. is allowed in public spaces on campus, where they can detain and arrest people without a warrant, as Michigan resides within 100 miles of the U.S. border. SDS demands that CMU establish a sanctuary campus, where I.C.E. would need to present a proper judicial warrant, including a name, address, and signature from a judge, in order to come anywhere on campus, including public spaces. This is only reasonable and necessary in taking every precaution to protect our community.

A sanctuary campus is urgent now more than ever, as I.C.E. is expanding their operations. They have shown time and time again that they are a terror to our communities. From using Supreme Court-backed tactics of racial profiling to make arrests, to abducting people in plain clothes without identifying themselves, to placing undocumented and legal immigrants, as well as citizens, in detention facilities with restricted access to food and medical care for weeks or months, I.C.E. has proven to be a threat not only to undocumented immigrants, but to our democracy. 

We demand that Central Michigan University show their commitment to protecting our community, and prove their solidarity with those who are being targeted. We must be an example of an institution willing to stand up against extremism and persecution. We must boldly and proudly declare our commitment to justice and unity.
