Coronavirus Housing Rights - San Marcos

The Issue

In light of the novel Coronavirus pandemic, a virus that requires isolation at home to stymie its spread, it is unreasonable to require tenants to continue to pay for the human rights of housing and utilities. With the economy effectively ground to a halt and many, if not most, of San Martians out of work it is an unreasonable request to maintain that they continue paying for these necessities. So far, the City of San Marcos has not adequately responded to the needs of the community. The demands of the community are as follows:

We demand that given the current Coronavirus crisis that the landlords of San Marcos immediately stop the collection of all rent, utilities, and fees from the individuals and families residing on properties they (landlords) own or manage.

Secondly, we demand that all tenants be given the option to cancel their current lease while the Coronavirus remains an ongoing pandemic.

Thirdly, we demand that all available housing that is not currently inhabited, be open to those in the community that are experiencing homelessness, whether as a result of the Coronavirus or not, at a free or HIGHLY reduced rate. This option is to be taken so long as doing so would not potentially expose the current tenants to infection.
