Congratulations on the election of Matt Mahan as the next Mayor of San Jose!

There is another important and urgent development in San Jose politics.  With the election of Matt Mahan as Mayor, as well as Sylvia Arenas as County Supervisor, there are now two vacancies that need to be filled on the San Jose City Council.  Historically, the City of San Jose has held special elections to fill vacant seats so that the citizens of the affected districts select their replacement council member.  However, several members of the city council have seen this as an opportunity for a power grab and are pushing to disenfranchise voters and instead appoint the replacement representatives themselves.  This would mean residents of Districts 8 and 10 would not be allowed to select their own councilmembers.

The city council will be voting on this matter on this Monday, December 5th, 2022.  There are several actions you can take to ensure we hold an election to select our replacement representatives.

  1. Sign the petition at https://www.letmevotesj.org/petition-sign-up
  2. Write an email to all city council members.  It doesn't need to be long, just a few words to say that you are a San Jose resident and you demand that a special election be held.  City council email addresses can be found at https://www.letmevotesj.org/email-council
  3. Attend and speak at the City Council meeting on this topic on Monday, December 5th at 5pm.  You do not have to say much, just that you are a San Jose resident and you demand that a special election be held.  Here is the link to attend by Zoom: https://sanjoseca.zoom.us/j/88957084529
  4. To attend the meeting in person, see details at https://www.letmevotesj.org/
