Alcohol killed more people in 2020 in England and Wales than in any of the previous 20 years, official data shows. There were 7,423 deaths from alcohol misuse last year - a rise of 20% from 2019, the Office for National Statistics says.

What's more, in England alone there are an estimated 586,780 dependent drinkers. Only 18% are receiving treatment.

Yet despite this pandemic of alcohol addiction leaving families shattered in its wake, drinking alcohol is still glamorised and enshrined in British culture.

In 2016, new laws were rightly put in place to regulate the way tobacco products could be displayed, ensuring that packaging was standardised and unappealing, that graphic health warnings were prominently printed on them and that they were out of sight when on sale.

It is now time that we get serious about tackling the scourge of alcohol addiction on our communities and subject alcohol to the same restrictions on display as cigarettes. Just as we discourage smoking, so should we discourage the use of the nation's favourite narcotic and promote more mindful drinking in order to prevent the needless loss of life and the misery and destruction that alcoholism brings.
