Bring Shamima Begum to justice. Bring her home.

Shamima Begum is a 19 year old, who was groomed when she was 15, into joining ISIS. Her actions and that of ISIS’ are absolutely horrific - I understand and share people’s anger.

To protect British citizens I believe Shamima needs to be both rehabilitated and held to account under the justice system in the UK. Stripping her of her citizenship prevents that. Ultimately, Britain is attempting to wash their hands of her and that does not make us any safer.

That’s why I’m calling on Sajid Javid to re-instate Shamima Begum’s citizenship and bring her to justice.

As a mother of two children, I couldn’t stand by and watch as Shamima’s 3 week old baby Jarrah died unnecessarily, as a result of not being able to come to the UK and have a safe place to recover. Three of her children have now died. And there are other innocent children there. Since Jarrah’s death has been made public, it has emerged that two more women with young children are stuck in Syria, stripped of their citizenship.

And as someone who is half Iranian myself, I fear Shamima’s case sets a dangerous precedent, if we can do this to Shamima, it could mean anyone with links outside of the country could have their citizenship revoked. It makes communities feel threatened. And likely reluctant to engage with authorities.

Pressure has been mounting on the Home Secretary as it feels the decision made, was a knee-jerk reaction. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott criticised the decision saying: "It is against international law to make someone stateless, and now an innocent child has died as a result of a British woman being stripped of her citizenship”.

We need to be stronger in tackling terror. Please help me seek justice by signing this petition.
