The Issue

We've lost too many people at Portage Lakes State Park, and it's time to ensure that no more lives are endangered. This beautiful local gem in Portage Lakes, OH, draws families, friends, and nature lovers. Yet, the swimming areas have become a source of concern due to insufficient safety measures.
People come to enjoy the tranquility and refreshing waters, but these pleasant outings have occasionally resulted in tragedy.

It's crucial that our local officials address these risks by implementing enhanced safety protocols. These should include increased lifeguard presence, clearer and more visible signage of water safety guidelines, designated swimming areas with proper barriers, and more frequent inspections of the area.

Moreover, better public awareness campaigns about water safety during the high season will empower our community with the knowledge to prevent these unfortunate events.

These comprehensive measures aim to protect those who visit the park and to prevent the devastation of losing more loved ones to preventable accidents. Our park should be a haven, not a hazard.

Ensuring this change not only honors those we've lost but protects our community for generations to come. Please join me in urging our officials to act now to make Portage Lakes State Park safer for all. Sign this petition to advocate for improved swimmer safety at our treasured park.

Ideas for enhanced safety measures:

  • More staffing to enforce rules
  • Rope and float line
  • Pole /rest area
  • Potential toys that act as rest area
  • Public swimming education clinics
  • Lifejackets /rescue equipment
  • More visible signage
  •   Cameras
  • Depth Markers
