The Issue

Petition for Safer Winter School Routes
To: City Officials and Public Works Department
Subject: Improving Winter Safety for Students Walking to School
We, the undersigned residents, parents, and community members, are concerned about winter sidewalk and snowbank conditions during student travel times to and from school.
Currently, sidewalk clearing and road snow removal often occur at the same time families and children are travelling. This creates large snowbanks, reduced visibility, narrowed walking paths, and increased traffic congestion from vehicles dropping off students who might otherwise walk safely. These conditions place children and families at unnecessary risk.
We respectfully request that the City review and adjust snow removal timing and priorities around school zones so that:
Sidewalks and crossings on school routes are cleared before peak student travel times.
Snowbanks near crossings and intersections are reduced to improve visibility.
School travel routes are prioritized for pedestrian safety during winter storms.
Our goal is not to complain, but to collaborate on practical solutions that support safer, healthier, and more walkable communities for our children.
We ask the City to work with schools and families to improve winter safety planning for students and pedestrians.
We support safer winter routes for all students.
