Safer Play for Every Paw – Resurface Glendale Dog Park with a Glass-Free Ground

The Issue

We've come to cherish the Glendale Dog Park at Glendale Park (formerly MIR Park) which has transformed from a place of neglect into a vibrant community hub. This park is where our dogs play and where neighbors and friends gather, making it an essential part of our lives. However, lurking beneath there is a dangerous hazard - broken glass.

THE PROBLEM? The glass is not simply litter left by park-goers. It's embedded in the fill dirt which is now exposed from the early days of the park's construction. With the grass on one side of the park continuing to deteriorate, the underlying dirt has been revealed, and with it, much broken glass.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? We’ve seen how painful and complicated paw injuries from glass can be. Paw tissue is extremely soft and doesn't hold stitches well—something vets often point out with concern. Because dogs rely on their paws constantly, even small cuts can lead to significant pain, limited mobility, and serious complications. These injuries frequently require sedation, emergency care, repeat appointments, high risk of infection and long healing times.

THE SOLUTION: To protect the safety and well-being of our pets, we propose filling the affected areas with a pet-safe solution:

Decomposed Granite (DG)
Pea Gravel
Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF)
Artificial Turf (Pet-Specific Grades)

We're seeking a cost-effective, durable solution that would prevent further exposure to harmful glass shards. Not only does this improve park safety: it makes messes easier to see, and stops the park from turning to mud after rain or snow, further improving the sanitation of the space.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE! We’re calling on fellow park-goers to sign this petition and support this important safety upgrade. With your help, we can take proactive steps to ensure Glendale’s dog park stays a safe, welcoming space for our pets, their people, and the community that gathers here every day.

Your support can make a difference in keeping our beloved pets safe and our community thriving.
