The issue

In July 2026, the Australian government implemented a significant regulatory change, banning the importation of nicotine pouches through personal importation schemes even with a medical prescription. This policy was put in place to address public health concerns, but it overlooks the role that nicotine pouches play in harm reduction for smokers seeking alternatives to traditional tobacco.

Nicotine pouches, a smokeless and tobacco-free alternative, have been shown in multiple studies to reduce harm and assist smokers in quitting. The absence of smoke, tar, and other harmful chemicals present in cigarettes makes them a preferred choice for many who wish to quit smoking while managing nicotine cravings. According to a publication in the Medical Journal of Australia, innovative harm reduction products like nicotine pouches can potentially transform smoking cessation efforts and significantly lower smoking-related health risks.

By banning these products, we remove an effective tool from adults who are consciously trying to transition away from smoking. This ban overlooks the evidence supporting the benefits of such harm reduction strategies and impinges on the rights of adult Australians to make informed choices for their health.

We understand and support strong regulations to prevent youth access to nicotine products; however, outright bans on alternative aids for adult cessation may have the opposite of the intended health outcomes. Countries like Sweden have seen remarkable success in lowering smoking rates by encouraging the use of smokeless tobacco and nicotine products.

We urge the Australian government to reconsider its position by reversing the ban and allowing the importation of nicotine pouches with a valid prescription. Let's prioritise harm reduction and the health of our citizens by providing them with the options to choose safer alternatives to smoking. Let's also preserve the RIGHT TO CHOOSE as an adult with personal autonomy.

Sign this petition to advocate for the right to choose effective smoking cessation aides through regulated, safe sources. Let's make harm reduction a priority for all adult Australians seeking to quit smoking.
