On September 18, 2023, I sadly had to put my beautiful dog Lexi to sleep. She was my world. A warm, affectionate, loving dog whose life did not deserve to end this way. Our nightmare began when one evening our beloved dog suddenly became violently sick and couldn't stand upright without falling over. This was followed by intense seizures, and her kidneys started to fail. Lexi's health declined rapidly throughout the night, and as quickly as this horrific series of events began, it was over the following morning our hearts were broken as she took her last breath and was gone. Lexi was never a dog to complain, but in her final moments, Lexi and I were inconsolable.

It was highly probable that the cause of her death was ingesting antifreeze into her system. This tragedy could have been easily prevented for us and for any loving pet owners out there like me if the industry takes action and modify their products. We need them to take responsibility and remove any flavours in their products that our pets are drawn to, as anti-freeze is a highly toxic substance to them; even a tiny dose in their system can have tragic consequences.

Antifreeze is a common household product used in vehicles and other machinery to prevent freezing and overheating. However, it contains ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance that poses a significant threat to animals who may accidentally ingest it. The sweet taste of antifreeze makes it particularly enticing for dogs, leading them towards an unfortunate fate.

On the 3rd dec 2014 the Telegraph wrote ‘According to cats protection, nearly 1,200 cats have suffered fatal antifreeze poisoning since November 2012 - equating to 50 cats a month’ when antifreeze was put into fountains in public places.

Thousands of pets suffer from antifreeze poisoning each year. The ingestion of even small amounts can cause severe kidney damage or failure, ultimately resulting in death.

It is crucial that we take action and urge manufacturers of antifreeze products to reformulate their recipes by removing the sweet taste altogether. By doing so, we can protect countless innocent lives and prevent heart-wrenching tragedies like mine from occurring again.

While there are alternatives available on the market such as propylene glycol-based antifreezes which are less toxic than ethylene glycol-based ones, they still possess some level of sweetness that may attract animals. Therefore, it is essential that we advocate for a complete removal or replacement of any potentially appealing flavours in these products.

By signing this petition, you will join me in urging regulatory bodies and manufacturers within the automotive industry to prioritize animal safety by modifying antifreeze recipes accordingly:

1) We demand manufacturers replace ethylene glycol with safer alternatives such as propylene glycol, which is less toxic to animals.

2) We call for the complete removal or replacement of any sweet-tasting additives in antifreeze products or bitterant added to prevent accidental ingestion by pets.

3) We urge regulatory bodies to enforce stricter labeling requirements on antifreeze containers, clearly indicating the potential dangers and necessary precautions.

The same fate that Lexi suffered could far too easily happen to your family, friends, or your beloved companion in the blink of an eye. To me, this is chilling enough information to demand a rapid change in the industry before anyone else’s pet has to suffer the excruciating death that she was forced to endure. All that it would take to stop another tragedy is a tweak from the automotive industry to reformulate their products, making them less attractive to our pets. So please make your voice count and help make our pets lives safer in the future.

This petition is entirely non-profitable; it is simply to raise awareness and make a safer world for our pets. Any donations that change.org asks for when you sign the petition are entirely voluntary. I do not receive any money from these donations.
