Safeguard Our Communities: Implement Protective Measures for Stormwater Drains
The issue
We, the undersigned, implore the Logan and Brisbane City Councils, and pertinent stakeholders to take immediate action to safeguard our communities by implementing protective measures for stormwater drains.
In light of recent incidents where individuals have fallen into stormwater drains, resulting in injuries and fatalities, including the tragic drowning of my 9 year old daughter, Mia Holland-McCormack, who escaped from her fathers home and drowned in a storm drain, it is imperative to enact preventative measures to avert such accidents in the future. These incidents not only jeopardise the lives of those involved but also place undue strain on emergency response teams and resources.
By installing sturdy grates, fences, or other appropriate barriers around stormwater drains in high-traffic areas such as Bill Kohlman Park which is near a children’s playground, we can effectively mitigate the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of our citizens, particularly children and pets who may be unaware of the hazards posed by open drains.
Furthermore, implementing protective measures will deter illegal dumping and littering into the drains, thereby helping to preserve our environment and waterways from pollution.
We call upon the Local Government to allocate the necessary funds and resources for the installation and maintenance of protective measures for stormwater drains, in collaboration with other necessary entities.
Together, let us take proactive measures to safeguard our communities and prevent future tragedies. Sign this petition to support the implementation of protective measures for stormwater drains today.
