Safeguard Michigan's Porkies and Lake Superior Against Dangerous Mining Practices

The Issue

The days of “extraction economy” are over! Our pristine natural environment is priceless and it is not for sale! Michigan's unique biodiversity and natural beauty are under considerable threat due to proposed risky mining projects. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, also known as "The Porkies" and Lake Superior are facing serious irreversible environmental threats. These mining endeavors, if not properly regulated, could result in significant environmental harm including damage to water quality and wildlife habitat. The Porkies is home to the largest old-growth hardwood-hemlock forest west of the Adirondacks, and its loss would be catastrophic (Source: Michigan Department of Natural Resources). Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area, serves as an essential resource for local communities and wildlife (Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). The proposed mining activities potentially threaten these irreplaceable resources and disrupt the balance of the ecosystem, which could take decades to recover. It is critical that we raise our voices and demand greater scrutiny and strict regulations on any proposed mining endeavors in these areas. Please sign this petition and help us protect our treasured Porkies and Lake Superior from high-risk, damaging mining practices.
