Safe Schools in Visalia

Safe Schools in Visalia
The Issue
What just happened Students in Visalia Unified School District deserve to feel safe, respected, and supported at school. Recently, an incident at Redwood High School involving homophobic speech and behavior once again raised serious concerns about how our district responds to discrimination. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated event. Over the years, families and students have repeatedly raised concerns about racism, homophobia, and unsafe school environments. Community members have spoken out at board meetings, shared their experiences publicly, and asked district leadership to take meaningful action. Yet the response from district leadership has too often been dismissive, inconsistent, or inadequate. Visalia students deserve better. Context: This is not new Concerns about discrimination in VUSD go back decades. In 2001, the district faced a lawsuit involving the ACLU related to the rights of LGBTQ+ students. In 2020, students and community members launched the #DearVUSD campaign, calling attention to racism experienced by Black students and students of color. Despite these warnings and calls for change, systemic solutions have not been implemented. Research consistently shows that school climate directly affects student safety, belonging, mental health, and academic success. Students who experience discrimination or harassment are more likely to struggle academically and emotionally. Schools have both a legal and moral obligation to ensure safe learning environments for every student. What we are demanding We are calling on the Visalia Unified School District Board of Trustees to take immediate action to protect students and restore trust in district leadership. Specifically, we are demanding that the district: • Conduct independent audits evaluating LGBTQ+ cultural competency, implementation of the FAIR Education Act, and the adequacy of student support systems. • Implement mandatory ongoing training for staff and administrators on bias prevention, harassment response, cultural competency, and trauma-informed practices, with training opportunities for district leadership, including the Board of Trustees. • Establish clear and transparent reporting systems for incidents of discrimination, harassment, and bias so that students and families know concerns will be taken seriously. • Engage community stakeholders, including students, parents, LGBTQ+ organizations, and local experts, in creating policies that ensure safe and inclusive schools. Why this matters Every student deserves to attend school without fear of harassment or discrimination. When district leadership fails to respond effectively to repeated incidents, it sends a message that student safety is not a priority. Visalia families, students, and community members have raised these concerns for years. We believe it is time for meaningful accountability. Call to Action We, the undersigned community members, are calling for a Vote of No Confidence in Superintendent Kirk Shrum and the Visalia Unified School District Board of Trustees for failing to provide decisive leadership in addressing discrimination and student safety. Sign this petition to support safer schools for all students in Visalia Unified School District. All signatures will be delivered to the VUSD Board of Trustees along with a formal petition outlining these concerns. Together, we can demand the accountability and leadership our students deserve.
