Safe school crossing on Grange Street Alfreton!

The Issue

A combined number of 1355 children attend Alfreton nursery school, Ashbourne Day nursery, Croft Community Infants, Woodbridge Junior school and David Nieper Academy in Alfreton.

Grange Street is a busy crossing point for these schools and nurseries.

Since our beloved Traffic Warden, Colin, stopped working in the role in September 2023, Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has not even advertised for a new warden due to financial pressures and a “recruitment freeze”.

Alfreton's children deserve to be able to get to school safely and desperately need crossing facilities.  A child has already been hit by a car and needed to attend ED.  How many more children must be hurt or killed before our council act?!

Even as an adult I find this junction scary.  The road is littered with poorly parked cars making visibility limited from the pavement and vehicles are coming from 4 directions.

Year 5 and 6 children are walking to and from the junior school unaccompanied and all of our senior school students are unaccompanied- the lack of a safe crossing is encouraging risk taking behaviour.

Walking to school is a healthy, free and environmentally sound choice which should be encouraged, but many parents are now choosing to take the car instead.

Sign this petition if you believe that DCC should be prioritising funding for our children’s safety, and help local parents restore safer crossing facilities.
