Tower Hamlets Councillors tonight voted to approve the Berkeley Homes South Quay Plaza 4 development by the Hilton Hotel on Marsh Wall. 56 storeys, 198 meters tall, 396 apartments. Two months ago Councillors unaminously rejected it as too tall and too dense but tonight 3 of them led by the Chair of the Committee, changed their minds. Two of them voted against and three who voted against in May did not attend the meeting tonight. Tonight we learned that density and even daylight sunlight issues will be ignored by Tower Hamlets Council planning department & some Councillors. They approved it despite knowing that the new building would have a materially negative impact on residents of Discovery Dock East & West i.e. loss of daylight in excess of 40% I had hoped after the rejection two months ago that the tide had turned, that Councillors would consider quality of new homes rather then just quantity and the affordable housing %. In some respects the changes made to this development actually worsen it i.e. giving up 25 affordable part purchase homes in return for £7m in cash which might not deliver 25 new units. Members of the public were not allowed to speak again in objection as it was the 2nd meetings. It clearly shows that most future developments will be approved unless two things happen; 1. Complete change in the senior planning team & leadership of the Council which is not going to happen 2. New policies on density are introduced in the Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Plan which is what we plan to do. If you have not already filled in our survey please do so here as we cannot write policies until you have been consulted; https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JYXMWR6 http://www.estatesgazette.com/…/berkeley-submit-plans-new-…/
