We know it’s been a long time since we last posted about the campaign, but please don’t mistake our silence for a lack of action. In fact, over the last 22 months, we have been working behind the scenes to try and save the studio alongside the Culture department of the Greater London Authority (GLA). The GLA have done an extraordinary and delicate job of trying to engage potential partners to purchase the site so that Harkers can remain open in its original function as a workspace for theatre and arts professionals. Sadly the GLA now feel that they have exhausted all their options and the negotiations with the owner of the Studio have fallen through. Plans to strip the building are now already underway.
We have not given up hope, however, and would love to be able to buy the building ourselves and put it in a trust, in order to preserve the studio for future generations as a creative workspace with a strong focus on community engagement. We just need to find the money to do so…
We are in the process of reviewing whether there is anything that we can do at the eleventh hour to save the building and what potential further paths we might be able to pursue. We will of course let you know of our plans in due course. In the meantime, if you do know of anyone who may be interested in purchasing a historic theatrical site with great future potential, please do drop us a line at saveharkersstudio@gmail.com.
Once again thank you all so much for the incredible level of support we have received since the start of the campaign.
With love and thanks,
The Harkers Studio Team
