Save Open Space Kota Kinabalu

Jun 26, 2018
We want to thank the State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Junz Wong for his statement which appeared in The Borneo Post yesterday regarding TAED and the development of Tg. Aru Beach.
We welcome his re-assurance when he made a firm and clear stance - that the TAED project will not go on and that the said land will revert back to DBKK, upgraded and remain as open space for the good of the public.
Many concerned citizens had been calling us and posting in Facebook, voicing their concerns regarding the future of their beloved Tg. Aru Beach.
For all of us who had been praying for the conservation of the original Tg. Aru Beach and Prince Philip Park, Junz’s statement was almost god-sent and we see it as the fulfillment of his election pledge.
We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment of Sabah, Christina Liew for her quick response to resolve the situation at Tanjung Aru beach
We would also like to acknowledge Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) staff who put in great effort cleaning up our iconic beach and heritage site, Tanjung Aru beach, after being directed by the state minister.
DBKK needs to constantly monitor, upkeep and maintain this as they’re the right organization to do so.
We look forward to a formal statement from the Chief Minister Shafie Apdal and his Cabinet about the future of Tg Aru Beach.
We hope the CM and cabinet will also investigate the TAED, repeal the TAED Local Plan and return the Tg. Aru Beach foreshore reserve and create a buffer zone or spaces up to Jalan Airport Lama as a City Park.
Kota Kinabalu is not just the capital but also the gateway to Sabah. As the future of Sabah would be dependent heavily on tourism, maintaining our rich bio-diversity, both in Nature and Culture, would be like ‘keeping the cake and yet eating it’.
Once again, we applaud our leaders’ wise decision and urge them to turn the whole of the project area into a great example of a big city or heritage park.
