The public meeting of Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) has exposed the fact that the project consultant DHI has failed to consult their client on many environmental aspect regarding their proposed development at Tanjung Aru beach. In order to resolve environmental problems which will occur, TAED has proposed unusual methods which will create more environmental problems which is diverting from their main objective of rejuvenating Tanjung Aru. Among unusual methods proposed by TAED are the bigger reclamation area, pushing the polluted waters to deeper sea waters, the planting of mangrove trees along the golf course, massive local animal relocation and tree transplanting. TAED has proposed the beach to be pushed further towards the sea to create more public access and a buffer zone between the private resort and public area but at the cost of increasing the reclamation area. The further the beach to deeper end, the more danger to the life of swimmers among the beach goers due to stronger and unpredictable flows of sea waves and current. The claim that the new reclaimed land will ensure better quality of Tg Aru waters by diverting petagas river pollution water to deeper waters will not solve the pollution problem, but merely channeling it out to deeper sea. Instead of decreasing pollution at Tg Aru beach, it will increase the level of pollution - even if it is not significant, to other areas such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Park which is the center of water activities especially scuba and diving. The announcement of Sunken Barrier Shoal near Pulau Mengalum as site sand sourced for reclamation about 50km North West from Kota Kinabalu and its 3 years of sand transportation proposal is an environmental disaster time bomb. Heaps of heavy barges will increase the risk of pollution and accident, due to the close proximity of the route next to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park which has many coral spots that will be affected. The proposal to plant mangrove trees along the side of the golf course area is a waste of effort and resources which has no great impact to the environment other than landscape interest to the golf courses. The golf course is a huge area which only can benefit less than 0.1 percent of the local population of Tanjung Aru town specifically and Kota Kinabalu City overall. This diverts from the promise of CM Musa Aman to return Tg. Aru beach back to the people. The mangrove trees can create more problems if the Petagas River debris still floats out from populated areas and becomes trapped among the roots of the trees which may require more cleanup work and become harder to manage. TAED plans to relocate the animals especially iconic Blue Naped Parrot and Oriental Pied Hornbill which have settled perfectly in Tg Aru is taking a gamble with nature and Kota Kinabalu will risk losing their unique feature forever. Tanjung Aru will no longer become a place for watching birds such as the rare Blue Naped Parrot that is been well known among tourists and bird enthusiasts around the world. TAED plans to relocate or rehabilitate the heritage trees will tremendously increase the project expenses for no reason which the survival and mortality are in question because such methods are rarely used in such development. Transplanting trees is an expensive operation which will cost the taxpayer more money with no guarantee that the trees will survive. About 40 heritage trees have been identified by the consultants but many other healthy trees will be cut down to give way to the proposed land reclamation and excavation activities. It is clear that TAED and DHI failed to understand the whole concept of nature by disturbing years of stable and balanced ecosystem with their manipulative method which most landscape experts or researchers will not dare to attempt or propose. The status of the DHI environmental consultant, Claus Pedersen who is also employed by TAED for the planning stage raises great concerns over the conflict of interest and impartiality in the environmental studies. The public risks not getting full information and honest studies regarding the environmental impact due to the direct meddling and manipulation of the project proponent. The approved Term of Reference (TOR) should be void due to the change of the project specification between the earlier and later proposed plan. The lack of TAED to provide information prior to the public meeting has made the public meeting a one way consultation where participant cannot diligently raise or address issues effectively regarding the details and changes in the project. It is important to know that Tg Aru residents will lose two of the their existing schools which will cause great inconvenience to them if they are to be relocated to other areas. About 2,000 students of Tanjung Aru 1 and Tanjung Aru 2 will be affected due to the relocation. Tg Aru beach can be developed in a robust activity center for all levels of community instead of turning it into a luxurious residential and resort area for high class society. For many years, Tg Aru beach has hosted many international yacht competitions due to their ideal location for such events, the reclamation of its beach will make it unsuitable for future sailing events. The proposed 7 storey parking complex with 1800 car park capacity will increase the traffic bottleneck within the traffic light junction in and out the new development area for a number of years to come even if a new road has been proposed. It will take a few hours for people to go in and out of the proposed beach and resort areas, during peak hours, even with the free electrical bus services, which does not make any traffic planning sense. DBKK also failed to respond to the 2014 Draft Kota Kinabalu Local Plan 2020 and the signature campaign which garnered more than 1,300 signatures appealing against the zoning of Tg Aru beach as a resort and hotel area which the SEIA process failed to report. The public are questioning the government and various ‘stakeholders’ sincerity and honesty in developing Tanjung Aru’ for the people’ through their comments via the online petition to stop the destructive project by TAED which has gathered about 2,000 signatures. We appeal to CM of Sabah, Musa Aman, to scrap the project and return Tg. Aru Beach to the people. We urge him to ensure that it is developed strictly for the recreational benefit of the rakyat. We want to invite people and all organisations to help us in spreading and advocating for this cause by giving their comments regarding Tg Aru beach in this online petition so that the Chief Minister of Sabah can read for himself the people's opinion. https://www.change.org/p/sabah-chief-minister-musa-aman-stop-the-tanjung-aru-eco-development-sdn-bhd-taed-project ***
