Help Save My Home

The Issue

I need YOU to sign this petition to stop the City of Ruston from demolishing my home.  With abuse of power and unwillingness to perform certain duties of the job, the building official has deemed the pictured house to be demolished.  This can happen to you, too.  Don't wait until it is too late.  PLEASE sign this petition to stop this action.  Then my house can be fully repaired and once again a home.

In April, 2019, this house fell victim to a large tree when a tornado blew through Ruston.  The owners at that time walked away from the damaged house and, as lienholder, I was able to legally acquire the house in April, 2020.  Neighbors had complained to the city about unsafe conditions - the carport had been virtually destroyed and was dangerous.  In May, 2020, a contractor was hired, who fixed the carport and roof.  The house is now safe and dry.  Completion would have been accomplished long ago, but city officials have yet to inspect it.  Without inspection, the work cannot be completed, so the property sits waiting.  Now this home faces demolition because of the passage of time.

In the meantime, additional work commenced to spruce up the property, but completion has been delayed due to the pandemic, a hurricane, another tornado, an ice storm, and family illnesses.  Although a building permit was in place that should have lasted until May 6, 2021, city officials cancelled it at some point, without notification.  They claim that 180 days had passed with no work being done.  This is not true.  City officials began the condemnation process of this house based on false information and half-truths.  Without notifying me, the owner of the property, a public hearing regarding condemnation of the house occurred in April, 2021.  Bill Sanderson, Building Official, told there is nothing more I can do.  With the power of God and people in this city, this unfair determination CAN and WILL be reversed.

The inspections office has been repeatedly asked to perform inspections, but they refuse to do so.  The reason: because there is no permit.  All I have asked and am asking now is for the proper inspections to be made and a reasonable amount of time afterwards to complete necessary repairs and improvements to this home.

I sincerely hope that this petition will help notify the Ruston City Council that the residents of Sandy Lane and others in Ruston, LA, do not want this house destroyed, and that the Council will reverse their decision to tear down this wonderful home.
