Ellie Butler was killed by her father, Ben Butler, who was aided in his defence by her mother Jennie Gray. Neal and Linda Gray, Ellie's grandparents, spent their savings to try to save Ellie being passed back to her dangerous parents but the judge dismissed their evidence and concerns as well as those of the police and social services, exonerating Ben Butler in the process. Within a year Ellie was dead. The parents have been convicted and sentenced for their crimes. To do justice for Neal Gray and in memory of Linda Gray (who died at the start of the trial) there should be a public enquiry into what went wrong for Ellie, so tragically, despite the huge effort of her grandparents, to try to avoid similar errors in the future and save childrens' lives.
