RSL Respect Petition – Hats remain outside the Club
The issue
The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) holds a revered place in our community, symbolising respect, remembrance, and tradition. These values are not just words but the foundation of the RSL's purpose, offering a sanctuary for veterans, members, their families, and supporters to honour those who have valiantly served our nation. However, a concerning issue has arisen, which many feel diminishes the solemn and respectful atmosphere that the RSL seeks to uphold.
Members, guests, and patrons have noticed an increasing trend of individuals wearing hats, caps, beanies, and hoodies within the RSL club premises. While these items of headwear are common in casual settings, there is a sentiment among members that they do not align with the respectful and traditional setting of the RSL, potentially detracting from the honour bestowed upon our service members within this space.
Consider the impact of such attire on the ambiance of the RSL, a place where decorum is cherished. Removing headwear in indoor settings is a sign of respect observed in many cultures around the world, symbolising humility and recognition of the shared values and history that the RSL embodies. By introducing a policy that asks patrons to remove headwear indoors, we can reinforce the respect and dignity of this honoured institution.
We propose that the RSL Committee consider implementing a clear and respectful indoor headwear policy, with specific exceptions for medical, cultural, religious, or other legitimate reasons. This approach respects individual circumstances while maintaining the dignified atmosphere fitting of the RSL.
Establishing such a policy will strengthen the community's connection to the RSL's core values, ensuring that we continue to honour our veterans with the reverence they deserve. Let us preserve the traditions that underpin our gratitude and respect for those who served, while adapting to the diverse society in which we live.
We urge the RSL Committee to consider this proposal seriously and formulate a policy that aligns with the values of the RSL, reinforcing its status as a place of respect and remembrance.
