On a rainy day in Ballarat this week, the community joined forces to create a tribute to more than 200 women lost to violence, including Ballarat region women Samantha Murphy, Rebecca Young, Hannah McGuire, Kobie Parfitt, Kathleen Severino, Nina Nicholson, Tracey Howard, Belinda Williams, Naomi Marree Bernaldo, Simone Teusner, Sharon Denise Siermans, Dannyll Goodsell, Rosalie Rowen, Tamara Farrell and Kate Amber Reeve.
I was humbled to install the She Matters Mural on the wall of CAFS Ballarat on Monday.
As we worked that day, I wanted to ask Prime Minister Anthony Albanese one question - 'who don't these women deserve a national investigation into their deaths? Why don't their families get a royal commission?'
The Mural features the faces and names of the Australian women killed since January 1, 2024. It has a special section for Ballarat women killed before this date. The wall will remain in place for at least one year. As with the Hosier Lane Mural, as women are killed, the Ballarat mural will grow.
Perhaps, the PM and all the Canberra MPs and Senators should come to Ballarat and stand in front of the wall - would they be able to say to these faces, you don't deserve a chance for your stories to be told, for your stories to influence how our nation moves toward ending the femicide epidemic.
Please help me get a Royal Commission into the Killing of Women and Girls - sign the petition (f you haven't already) and share it with your circle. The more voices we get the better chance we have of success!
If you want to know about Australia's femicide toll visit The RED HEART Movement - you will find every death documented, the current femicide and child death tolls and a lot of other information about violence against women and children!
