Windrush Charlton Primary is now in its 3rd successful school year and being located on the dangerous and fast moving Woolwich Road (A206) has heavy traffic approaching from both sides going toward the Woolwich Ferry and the Blackwall Tunnel. The majority of local residents are located on the Charlton (South) side of this road, and the majority are also accessing the school via bus which means daily crossing of this increasingly busy, goods transportion, bus and commuter route.
Since our initial campaign in the school's first year, the council has seen fit to classify the use of a pelican crossing as risky and have provided for safe assistance crossing this very dangerous road, via installation of a crossing guard (Thankyou John!). This is definitely a victory for common sense, and between our own efforts and the council's agreement, we have succeeeded in doing the right thing.
Currently our lollipop man is trying his best to run from one side of the road to the other to cope with his increased workload, but this effort is at great risk of compromising the safety of the crossing parents / carers and their children. With one side constantly exposed, the room for accidents on this road is only ever reduced by 50%, whilst the cars show no sign of being able to comprehend the danger!
As we are now in our 3rd year, what were 90 young children, are now 270 young children, with 90 more arriving every September until capacity of 630 is reached in 2018! This is something we feel needs to be taken very seriously and the pre-emptive, pro-active installation of a second crossing guard is the only clear sign we can accept as the council's understanding of the risks we are facing.
Why wait and see if something goes wrong, when we can commit to something sensible to try and prevent it!
